I have african american hair and my hair continues to break off....?

I have african american hair and my hair continues to break off....?

Ironically I recently had this problem a few months ago, because I was not taking care of my hair (I am black and mexican, but I have straight up black hair). I had a lot of breakage in the middle of my head and kept it in a ponytail for 3 months until I had enough of the ponytail. I went to the shop, got my hair cut really short (the shortest ever in my life because my hair was so DAMAGED and UNHEALTHY). It is important that African-American (AA) hair be washed at least once a week (unless you sweat or around a lot of dust then wash it more often). Here is what I do that works for me and I do my sister's hair every Saturday and she is not mixed like me and has AA hair.Affordable but good shampoo and conditioner that has works is Pantene for colored women and leave the conditioner in for about 5 minutes (or try Aveda Brilliant Shampoo and Conditioner). You also need a good leave in conditioner and I use Aveda Damage Remedy Intensive Restructuring Treatment. This product is to be used once a week. Next, I protect my hair before applying heat in it. Therefore, I apply a dime sized amount of CHI silk infusion (non-greasy and won't weight your hair down) and blow dry my hair straight. Next, I apply another dime size amount of silk infusion in my entire hair before using the CHI flat iron. (if you straighten it, try CHI flat iron and it leaves your hair with a silky salon look- don't get a cheap flat iron- the difference is dramatic to your hair and ceramic is less damaging). If you use a relaxer, I would lay off of it for a few months until you get your hair back healthy (I have been using Optimum Relaxer and it is really gentle). The CHI flat iron will do wonders for your hair (try E-bay or if you buy it in a store it comes with a one year warrenty) without buring it. I then section my hair and grab very small strands and spray each section before applying the CHI flat iron with both Motions heat protecting spray (or try Aveda Brilliant Damage Control) and Isoplus oil sheen (just a little). Next, I straighten it and when I use the CHI I kind of turn it like a curling iron for that pretty flip/curl in my hair. It comes out really pretty and silky and most importantly, healthy cause I am protecting my hair BEFORE applying heat- ESPECIALLY since I have a relaxer.

Also, grease your scalp to keep it healthy. The brand Optimum grease comes in a small pink jar and is light (or try Aveda Brilliant Anti-Humectant Pomade and Aveda Brilliant Spray on Shine). Remember, lay off any relaxer for now so your hair can become healthy again unless you plan on going to a shop every week. Otherwise, the CHI flat iron if your hair is long enough is good for now. My hair has been so much healthier the past two months and a half than it has been for those previous three months. Say no to permanet dye. Stick with the wash out. It won't damage your hair. Hope this helps. Please get your ends trimmed every 4 to 6 weeks and wrap your hair up EVERY night. Try to apply heat to your hair no more than once or twice a week. If you have to use a curling iron PLEASE spray with the heat protector (Motions or Aveda Brilliant Damage Control). It is the heat that will jack up your hair. I do my hair at home because I enjoy it (besides saving money). Unfortunately, you do have to spend some money on AA hair to get it back healthy if it is really damaged. I know I had to. Good luck!

Aveda Damage Remedy system. Its a shampoo, conditioner, and intensive treament. This is aveda's most expesive line. but believe me ts worth it.

This stuff works.

aveda products are atual, they have no waxes or harsh chemicals and leave your hair with a beautiful bounce. I have used it myslef an it really does leave your hair thicker with life.

I work at aveda and i'm educated about the products.

Try it out and be sure not to mix aveda product with any other ones.

Good luck!!!

i had this prob too. most likely it's too dry. avoid straightening irons and blow dryers, they dry out hair horribly. put some hir pomade /grease/ oil whaterver in your hair and wrap it before you go to bed every night. use a moisturizing and anti- breakage conditioner and don't wash your hair too often because that dries it out. try once or twice a week. brush hair starting at the bottom, then move up. also don't over brush har or rip out knts

Wash out conditioners are fine BUT you need a good LEAVE-IN conditioner. Especially when it comes to african-american hair. You want to have consistant maintaince of it. I highly recommend PANTENE pro-v restoratives Strengthening Spray. You can buy it at Walmart, Kmart or any drugstore. Use it after you wash and condition as your last step. You can also use it daily. Honestly the results are immediate. It's from the breakage defense line. Try it and let us know how it worked for you.

If you don't get your hair trimmed every 6 weeks then you need to to do so. You also need to put a deep conditioner in your hair every week for about 15-20 minutes. Put a plastic cap over your head and sit up under the hair dryer. The heat will help the conditioner in your hair. When it's time to rinse your hair rinse with almost cold water. This cold water will lock the conditioner into the pores in your head. You should also try to do a hot oil treatment in your hair once a week also. You can get these from the store and use while your in the shower if you want to. VO5 hot oil treatment works for African American hair too. You also need to make sure your hair is not dry in the scalp either. Dry hair can cause break off as well so make sure you use a good everyday moisturizer. By the way I'm a black female too.

Use a wide toothed comb to comb your hair - not a brush.

Try not to use hair straighteners or irons on your hair. Keep the ends trimmed and use a really good conditioner.
